The brief was to design a bright and airy extension with garden views, off the south gable elevation of the existing house. The extension is to serve as a space to relax in, both during the day and in the evening. The design approaches this by dividing the extension into two volumes: Day room and Evening room.

The larger day room volume contains a relaxing bistro-like seating area and a reading space - both of which overlook the garden. Large areas of glazing open up towards the East and South garden grounds, allowing for optical sunlight throughout the day.

The smaller West facing evening room volume contains a cozy snug area with a wood burning fire for movie watching. This space has two smaller windows, which have been intended to frame a romantic scene: One overlooking the new koi pond and existing boundary trees, with their leaves changing by the season. The other West facing window will capture the sunset.

The two volumes have sculpted a low profile overlapping pavilion form with large overhanging roofs, which in turn creates a sheltered walkway below that links the front and rear gardens. The recessed space between where the day and evening volumes intersect has created opportunity for an outdoor koi pond, shielded by the existing trees.

A material palette of timber oak, concrete render and brick have been selected to unify the clients’ theme of ‘relax’ and distinguish the extension from the existing house.
